REDUCED-SPEED TRIP FOR HOISTS.
Application filed December 15, 1919. Serial No.
To all whom it may concern:
e it known that I, DANIEL F. LEPLEY,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Connellsville, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Reduced-Speed Trip for Hoists, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mine hoists and more especially to mechanism whereby the speed of the hoist can be reduced when it is used for the purpose of hauling men.
it hoist, when used for carrying coal or other material travels at a much greater speed than practical when men are being hauled. It has heretofore been the practice to signal the engineman whenever a load of men was to be raised or lowered and he would then set the engine so as to move the cage at a safe speed. Owing to misunderstandings of signals, inattention, and other causes, cages filled with men have sometimes been raised or lowered at the excessive speed employed when coal or the like is handled, with the result that fatalities have occurred and apparatus has been often wrecked.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide means under the control of an operator or eager at the loading point, whereby the speed of the hoist is reduced independently of any action by the engine man and whereby the normal or high speed can be restored should it be desired to move the cage upon its return trip while empty or while carrying coal or the like.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawing is illustrated a side elevation, partly in diagram, of the apparatus.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference. 1 designates a foot plate under which is arranged a transverse shaft Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1920.
2 to which is secured a lever 3 provided at its lower end with a downwardly extending tapered eyed. Pivotally connected to a bracket 5 is a lever 6 having a weight 7 whereby its downward movement is facilitated. Between the ends of this lever is attached the upper end of a hanger 8 which increases in width downwardly, as shown and is movable upi-vardly and downwardly relative to the lever 23 and also relative to a rod 9 extending through the hanger and on which are mounted opposed cushions 10. The lever 3 and hanger 8 are adapted to be held in elevated positions by a rod 11 which connects the lever 6 to an arm 12 extending at an angle from a lever 13 carrying a pawl 14 adapted to be seated in a notch 15 in a segment 16. A rod 17* is supported under the pawl and has a weight 18 at its lower end while it is pivotally connected at an intermediate point to a lever 19 fulcrumed as at 20 and having a foot piece 21 connected to one end.
A lever 22 is fulcrumed on a bracket 23 and is pivotally connected at one end to a rod 24: slidable in a post 25 and a weighted latch 26 engages this rod and is adapted to be actuated by a rod 27 connected to one arm of a bell crank lever 28 which is adapted to be operated in timed relation with the ascent of the cage of the hoist by suitable mechanism not shown and which constitutes no part of the present invention. I
The parts hereinbefore described form, in themselves, no part of the present invention but have been shown and described in Patent No. 1,216,1423 issued to me on Feb. 13th, 1917. They are so constructed and arranged that, by shifting the rod17 upwardly and releasing the pawl 14: the weighted lever 6 will swing downwardly and lower the hanger 8 so that its broadest portion will be positioned between the cushions 10. The rod 9 is adapted to move slowly in a longitudinal direction during the raising and lowering of a cage and by lowering the hanger one of the cushions 10 will shift the lever 3 to its neutral position sooner than would be the case should the hanger be raised, thereby insuring the stopping of the hoist at the landing level and not at the higher or dumping level. This operation has been set forth fullv in my patent hereinbefore mentioned. For the purpose of releasing the pawl by operating the rod 17, an arm 29 is preferably extended is adapted, when the lever downwardly from the lever 19 and is conlever 33.
For the purpose or" limiting the speed of ascent or descent of the hoist cage a lever 34 is :tulcrumed above the lever 6 and has one arm connected by a wire 35 or other flexible element to the lever 6. An operating wire 36 or the like is also connected to said arm. The other arm of the lever 34 has spaced laterally extending ears 3? extending to opposite sides of the lever 3 and carrying stop screws 38. A'stop projection 39, preterably square, is provided on thelever 3 and 34. is shifted, to lie between the screws 38. Thus when the man hoist t *ip is set by operating the lever 33, whichlowers the hanger 8, it willbe apparent that the descending lever 6 will pull through wire 35 upon one arm of lever This. will cause the ears 37 to move upwardly to positions at opposite sides of the projection 39 so that when the lever 3 is shifted out of normal position to operate the hoist, its movement will be limited by the projection 39 coming against one of the screws 38 and, as a'result, the hoist cannot be moved at more than a predetermined speed.
lVhen lowering men from the ground level to the shaft bottom the trip mechanism, including lever 6 and hanger 8 is not used. Instead the eager at the top oi the shaft pulls the wire 36 so as to raise the steps 37 and cause the cage to descend at reduced speed.
The lever 3 shown m the drawings is used for operating the brake mechanism of the hoist and another lever corresponding therewith but not shown, 1s used for controlling the action of the engme of the hoist. Both levers are to be constructed as shown and both are to be controlled in their movement by stop lugs 37. extending into the paths of the projections 39 on the respective levers. By having this duplicate arrangement the two levers will be simultaneously controlled. by the actuation 01 the lever 3 As the use of two levers for the purpose specified is old in my patent mentioned the illustration thereof has not been deemed necessary inthe present case. i 7
It is to be understood that the hanger 8 and the parts associated therewith are not to be used except in connection with dump cages employed for handling both men and coal. 7 r
That is claimed is 1. In hoisting mechanism the combination with a manually operated controlling lever I and a :iro'ection thereon of means under the control of a person at the loading point of the hoisting mechanism for movement into the path 01" the projectionto limit the throw of the lever from neutral position.
2. In hoisting mechanism the combination with a manually operated controlling lever, of means under the control of a person at the loading point of the hoisting mecha- "nism, for limiting the throw of the lever away from neutral position. 7
3. In hoisting mechanism the combination with a manually operated controlling lever, of adjustable means under the control of a person located at the place of loading for limiting the movement of said lever away from its neutral position.
4. In a hoisting mechanism the combination with a manually operated controlling l6V61,0f a stop lever, stop devices thereon and at opposite sides of the controlling lever, and means operated by a person located at theplace of loading tor shifting the stop lever and positioning the stop devices to limit the movement of the-controlling lever away from neutral position.
In hoisting mechanism the combination with a controlling lever, and man hoist trip mechanism including a weighted lever and a hanger, and meansoperated by a person located at the point of. loading for releasing
