Bending boot-irons.-A bar of metal having a bevelled edge is bent into U, V, or similar form to form a boot tip or other article by rollers d having conical grooves co-operating with a lower die a, which also may be grooved. The bar is fed into the groove in one of the members prior to the bending operation, and is positioned by a gauge h. One face of the bar may be bevelled. The rollers may be mounted on the plunger c by means of adjustable pivoted brackets. Fig. 4 shows a spring clip on the gauge k to grip the end of the blank. Fig. 5 shows a device for removing the blank from the die a, comprising a pivoted ring m formed with projections m<1> which raise the blank when the ring is moved by a pin-and-slot device l, n connected to the plunger c. In a modification, the die a is not grooved and is dome-shaped so that it can be turned into different angular positions. The blank is held on the die by a spring-pressed projection on the plunger. The rollers d are mounted on pivoted arms and are connected by links to other rollers running on vertical cam surfaces, which may be supported and may be arranged to bend the blank through more than 180 degrees. A cutter is carried by the plunger c to sever the blank from a strip which is fed into the machine. Fig. 7 shows a roller d made in two parts d' pressed together by a spring w, in order to prevent wedging of the blank in the groove.
