A wall-mounted can opener comprises a carrier plate 31 pivoted at 32 to a main bracket 10 and carrying a driven cutter wheel 27 which is brought downwardly into a can-cutting position adjacent a traction feed wheel 24 on initial rotation of a handle 22 in one direction (i.e. clockwise) by a cam disc 42 carried on the traction feed wheel shaft 17 and engaging a flange 39 of the pivoted carrier plate. The cutter wheel is retained in this position by a catch plate 44 loosely-mounted on the shaft 17 and having a shouldered end 47 engaging the carrier plate flange 39. On reverse handle rotation, a radial face of a sawtoothed projection 49 on the side face of the can, Fig. 4, pivots the catch plate against the bias of a torsion spring 45 out of engagement with the carrier plate. On continued reverse handle rotation, the pivoting catch plate engages the side edge of the carrier plate to pivot the latter upwardly until the flange 39 abuts the cam disc thereby moving the cutter wheel out of the can-cutting position. The sawtoothed form of the projection 49 permits the cam disc to rotate past the catch plate during clockwise can-opening rotation of the handle. A spring-loaded permanent magnet 55 is provided for retaining the removed can end.
