Abstract
1,215,016. Stabilizing ammonium nitrate. S. J. PORTER. 14 Dec., 1967, No. 56768/67. Headings C1A and C1B. A flame- and detonation-stable fertilizer grade NH 4 N0 3 having a N content of at least 33% is an integral, intimate and uniform mixture comprising 5-10% of an ammonium o-, m-, pyro- or poly-phosphate, up to 35% of which may be replaced by KCl or (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 , and may be obtained by adding the phosphate (&c.) to the ammonium nitrate, a liquid phase being developed at some stage during the mixing process. Various procedures described are (a) crystallization of the product from a mixture obtained by adding ammonium phosphate, solid or as a concentrated solution, to an ammonium nitrate solution; (b) spraying a similar mixture in a prilling tower; (c) adding ammonium phosphate, solid or concentrated solution, to molten ammonium nitrate immediately after formation but before further treatment; (d) spraying a powder or a hot concentrated solution of ammonium phosphate on to a moving belt carrying ammonium nitrate as a melt or as crystals or prills; and (e) adding dry phosphate to moistened nitrate in a mixer, mixing and drying.
