Ammonium and sodium nitrate prills are produced by prilling an ammonium nitratecontaining melt or solution containing 0-10% by weight of water such that prills of a desired porosity are obtained according to the amount of water employed, the solidification temperature of the melt or solution being reduced relative to the decomposition temperature of the melt or solution by greater more than 10% by weight based of the melt or solution of sodium nitrate, which amount is 20-60% by weight of the amount of ammonium nitrate in the melt or solution. The prilling is carried out by known methods, the sodium nitrate being dissolved in the melt or solution immediately prior to introducing it to the spraying device. In one embodiment the sodium nitrate is added prior to the adjustment of the water content of the melt to obtain the desired water content. The sodium nitrate may also be prepared in situ by simultaneously neutralizing sodium hydroxide and ammonia with nitric acid. The melt or solution to be prilled may also contain other additives, e.g. fertilizer components such as ammonium phosphate, calcium or magnesium nitrates and borates. For agricultural purposes compact prills may be prepared using melts or solutions having a water content of less than 1% by weight to produce fertilizers suitable for beet and cultivated sea-side plants.
