Abstract
Mixed fertilizers containing ammonium nitrate and ammonium phosphate are made by a process comprising the steps of forming a mixture of dil. H3PO4 with dil. HNO3 or aq. NH4NO3, ammoniating the mixture to a NH3 : PO4 mole ratio of at least 1 : 1, preferably 1.2 : 1 to 1.7 : 1, (based solely on the ammonium phosphate), reducing the water content of the ammoniated mixture by passing it, in counter-current to NH3, through a low retention-time evaporator (e.g. falling film) and processing the resulting melt to obtain a prilled or granular mixed fertilizer. The ammoniation may be carried out with gaseous or liquid NH3 or an ammoniating solution at a temperature below 140 DEG C. When the fertilizer is to be prilled the water content is reduced to below 1% by weight but only to 1-10% when recycle granulation is the subsequent treatment. Additional fertilizer ingredients (e.g. K compounds) may be added to the melt prior to the prilling or granulation.
