Abstract

1,214,784. Projectiles. WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKONBUHRLE A.G. 3 March, 1969 [7 March, 1968], No. 11313/69. Heading F3A. A projectile 1, Fig. 1, for ejection from a carrier projectile 30 comprises a hollow explosive charge 13, a rod 32 slidable in a passage extending towards the rear of the projectile and a detonator 35, Fig. 4, fastened at or near the front end of the projectile and displaceable between a non-primed position within the cavity of the explosive charge and a primed position at or near the rear end of the passage. Slidable sleeves 18 and 19 in the nose of the projectile embody a striker 25 and a detonator 20 and are held against forward displacement under the action of a spring 31 by a lock 29 resting against the casing of the carrier projectile. A star-shaped plastics member 39 attached to the rear end of the rod 32 is rotationally secured to the base of the projectile and serves to prevent the lock 29 disengaging the wall of the carrier projectile. The projectile is provided with a copper liner 10 and a plastics tube 12. Grooves 4 in the wall of the projectile provide a fragmentation casing. Upon ejecting the projectile from the carrier projectile, the lock 29 is retracted and the sleeves 18 and 19 and associated parts are moved forwardly to an extent determined by the speed of the projectile. Dynamic air pressure acting on the plastics member 39 pulls the rod 32 rearwardly to align the detonator 35 with a booster 14. On impact with a target, the striker ruptures a plate 23 and strikes the detonator 20, the flash from the detonator being transmitted to the detonator 35. The projectile is used with a carrier projectile as described in Specification 1,214,783.
