Abstract
1,214,757. Automatic web guiding. GPE CONTROLS Inc. Aug.21, 1969 [Nov.18, 1968], No.41804/69. Heading G3R. The lateral position of a moving web is automatically corrected in dependence on deviation of lateral position and angular deviation of a longitudinal portion of the web. In Fig.3, lateral displacement of the edge of a moving web 52 at two longitudinally spaced points in the vicinity of a a roller 58 is detected by photo-electric detectors 60, 62 the outputs of which are separately applied to amplifiers 66, 68. The gains of the amplifiers are set to different values by feedback potentiometers 70, 72 so that the amplifier outputs, applied differentially to an amplifier 76 produce a resultant signal having components dependent on lateral displacement and longitudinal inclination of the web relative to detectors 60, 62. The resultant signal controls a pivotted jet 86 so that a hydraulic actuator 88 is operated to pivot a pair of rollers 54, 56 and thus steer the web back to a desired lateral position with its edge in a desired line of travel. In a modification, the edge of a web is maintained in a constant lateral position relative to a reel on which it is being wound by automatically controlling the lateral position of the reel relative to a roller providing frictional restraint upstream. Application to the maintenance of the centre of the web, instead of its edge, in a desired position is also referred to.
