Abstract

1,214,706. Carbonizing. HENRY BALFOUR & CO. Ltd. 8 April, 1969 [18 April, 1968], No. 18351/68. Heading C5E. [Also in Division F4] Carboniferous fuel, e.g. coal, is carbonized during passage through a retort 1 by a heating gas supplied to one zone of the retort, and cooled by a gas supplied to another zone of the retort, a mixture of the heating and cooling gases, together with tar impurities, being discharged from, and recycled to, the retort. One portion of the impure recycled gas is combusted, e.g. at 35, externally of the retort, and a portion, e.g. a portion 33 intended for cooling, is detarred during recycling. The combusted gas portion comprises the heating gas. In a modification, see Fig. 6 (not shown) the discharged gas is divided into two streams, one being combusted with air in a first zone of a furnace, and the other, smaller, stream being detarred and delivered to a later zone of the furnace. The heated gas is again divided, one stream going directly to the retort and the other to a washer/ cooler and thence to the retort.
