Abstract

1,214,671. Glass manufacture. R. J. HANSFORD. 4 Feb., 1969 [7 Feb., 1968], No. 6173/68. Heading C1M. [Also in Division E1] In a construction process, raw materials for making glass are passed continuously into a chamber and through a hot zone of a heat source, whereby the material is transformed into a partially or completely molten state, and is then deposited from the chamber in superposed successive layers, each layer, except the first, adhering to the previous layer by virtue of its molten state, the layers then being allowed to cool. As shown, a housing 1, of metal with glass fibre insulation 7 and refractory cement lining 8, has a volute recess 9 with an oil burner 10 at the entrance. Raw material is supplied through duct 16 and passes into the air stream produced by a fan 12 and through a duct 14 to the burner 10. Alternatively, the material may pass through a duct 17 directly into the housing 1. The material is carried round the recess 9 and as they melt, the particles of material merge and the molten material flows towards the restricted outlet 19. In a further embodiment, melting is by carbon electrodes positioned either side of the chamber and movable along oppositely threaded shafts by a motor at a speed dependent on the current fed to the arc between the electrodes. Mounting.-The chamber is mounted as required according to the final construction desired. For example, for a circular building, it may be mounted on an arm from a screwthreaded pillar, the arm having a counterweight so that the chamber is set at the desired radius. After each revolution. the arm is raised by the depth of the applied layer, e.g. from <SP>1</SP>/ 8 th to 1/4 of an inch. For a dome or spire, the radius of revolution could be progressively decreased. For other constructions, the mounting may be varied for building, e.g. arches of bridges, large diameter pipes, rectangular or other shaped buildings or roads may be laid. Material.-Sand is the preferred material and part of the sand is preferably not fused but remains as a separate phase. Particles of glass may be used, or blast furnace slag, or a mixture of materials to make glass, for example, lime, soda ash and silica sand. Coal dust or coal mine waste may be added and once started, the coal dust may constitute the main fuel. Coloured products may be produced by appropriate raw materials.
