Abstract
631,061. Mineral wool production. STEVENS, A. H. (Johns-Manville Corporation). Sept. 23, 1947, No. 25810 [Class 56] Apparatus for making mineral wool has a means 12 for discharging a stream of molten material 14, a rotor 18 positioned to receive the stream, and a second rotor 20 adjacent the first rotor and positoned to receive molten material discharged from the first rotor. Molten rock, slag, glass etc. 14 flows from the discharge 12 of the furnace 10 to the cylindrical or slightly coned rotors 18, 20 mounted respectively on shafts 22, 26 so that rotor 18 is tilted with respect to 20. In the example given the rotor 20 is on a horizontal axis and rotor 18 is tilted 12 degrees from the vertical. The rotors are driven in opposite directions and spaced about # to 3/32 inch apart, and the spacing and angle between them are adjustable. The peripheral surface of the rotor 20 has a series of small V-shaped grooves 28, and rotor 18 has similar grooves except at portions which receive the molten stream 14, where the recesses 30 are larger and of rectangular sections. A suitable peripheral velocity is about 13,000 ft./min. obtained with rotors of 11 inches diameter turning at 4,500 r.p.m., and conveniently there are 20 to 40 grooves 28 per inch. The material 14 contacts the rotor 18 to the left of the axis 22 and meets the grooves 30, some material bonds in these grooves to form a ring 32, but most is projected tangentially at increased speed and in slightly spread condition on to the peripheral surface of rotor 20. A bonded ring 34 is then formed, and the remaining material is projected back on to rotor 18 forming ring 36, and a further ring 38 may also be formed. The rings are temporary and may be stripped from the rotors whereupon new rings form. When the remaining material reaches the bight between the rotors it is levelled off and mixed with the material carried around each rotor, and when the rotor surfaces separate fiberization takes place, and the molten material on the outside of rings 32 etc. is thrown off and drawn out. A binder may be introduced into the fibre which is collected in any suitable manner.
