Abstract
1,214,647. Laminates. W. ACHERMANN, and F. ACHERMANN. 24 Nov., 1967 [28 Nov., 1966], No. 53568/67. Heading B5N. [Also in Division B8] At least one surface of a web of corrugated cardboard is formed with grooves extending transversely to the corrugations and the web is folded about the lines of the grooves to form a supporting element wherein the side walls of the grooves snugly abut each other. As shown in Fig. 2, a web of corrugated cardboard comprising two corrugated layers 1, each faced on both sides with plane layers, is first formed with cuts 4 extending from one web surface into the corrugated layer remote from that surface. A tool (not shown) is then inserted into each cut 4 to open the latter into a channel 4<SP>1</SP>. The channel is then deformed by a further tool into a wedge-shaped groove 4<SP>11</SP>. The web, formed with a number of grooves 4<SP>11</SP>, is then folded to form a supporting element, e.g. as shown in Fig. 8. The angle between opposite side walls 5 of each groove 4<SP>11</SP> is chosen with regard to the final shape the web is to assume, so that on folding to form this shape, the side walls 5 just touch, the apices 7 at the folds not being unduly stressed by the folding. A number of shapes like that shown in Fig. 8 may be adhered to each other and to plates 8 and 9 to form the laminate shown in Fig. 10. To form the shape shown in Fig. 8, it is necessary to form five grooves all on one side of the web. If other shapes, e.g. a row of equilateral triangles formed by bending one, continuous, grooved web, Fig. 6 (not shown), are to be produced, the grooves may be formed on both sides of the web, Fig. 5 (not shown). The web may be a single layer of corrugated cardboard, faced on both surfaces, Fig. 4 (not shown).
