Abstract
1,214,540. Regenerating spinning baths. SOC. ITALIANA RESINE S.p.A. 17 Dec., 1968 [20 Dec., 1967], No. 59988/68. Heading B5B. Spinning baths used in making acrylonitrile copolymer threads, by extruding a dimethylformamide (DMF) solution of the polymer into a coagulating bath comprising cumene, DMF and linear paraffins having 10 to 16 carbon atoms and drawing the threads in baths mainly comprising the said paraffins, are regenerated by mixing the solution discharged from the coagulating bath, which contains raised quantities of impurities and DMF, more than 50% cumene, 15 to 35% DMF and up to 25% of the said paraffins, with the solution discharged from the drawing bath, which contains raised quantities of cumene and DMF, impurities and over 80% of the said paraffins, and adding to the mixed solution the cumene and paraffins which separate as the lighter phase from the thread wash baths. Then 5 to 9% by weight of the resulting mixture is treated with between 0À5 and 10 parts by weight of water per part by weight of DMF in the mix to separate an aqueous layer and an organic layer. Water is distilled from the aqueous layer and the residue is distilled by a thin layer technique to separate DMF, and the organic layer is fractioned to separate cumene from the paraffins. The cumene together with a DMF fraction and, if desired, paraffins, are added to an untreated fraction of the mix to restore the composition to the values of the coagulation feed, the said fraction being recycled to the coagulating bath, and the paraffins being recycled to the drawing bath. The remaining DMF is used in forming the spinning solution.
