Abstract

121,439. Hopkinson, E. July 30, 1918. Vulcanizing.-In the manufacture of tyre casings, the casing is built upon an expansible wall 3 carried by a rigid core 2, fluid being admitted through a passage 4 to expand and shape the casing, and after setting, the casing is removed and vulcanized under direct internal fluid pressure. The wall 3 is secured to the core by members 6 engaging beads, such members 6 being clamped together with an interposed lead seal 8 by channelled members 9 locked by a wedge 10. During shaping, the casing is confined by a 2-part mould 11 secured by clamps 14 and provided with a shaping-surface 13. The wall 3 may be expanded by air or water pressure. The pressure fluid for the vulcanizing operation may consist of carbon dioxide, ammonia, nitrogen, or steam.
