Abstract

1,214,170. Laminating. GULF OIL CANADA Ltd. 17 Dec., 1968 [8 Feb., 1968], No. 6236/68. Heading B5N. A process for securing a first flexible web 15 to a second flexible web 20 by a thermoplastic resin adhesive comprises:-(a) applying a coating of viscous liquid thermoplastic fibre forming adhesive material, e.g. by means 12, to at least one of a pair of moving surfaces, e.g. of counter-rotating heated rollers A and B to establish between the surfaces a quantity 13 of the material which is in contact with each said surface, (b) continuously moving each surface in cyclic motion so that the segments of the surfaces, in contact with material 13 are drawing away from one another, the speed of cyclic motion being sufficient to form fine tacky filaments F of the adhesive material between the segments as they separate, (c) passing web 15 in proximity to material 13 on a line which intercepts at least some of the filaments F, e.g. over surface of roller C, so that tacky filaments are deposited on the web 15, (d) laminating web 20 to web 15 by passing them into contact with each other, e.g. at nip formed by rollers C and 20 with the deposited filaments therebetween before the filaments can set or harden and (e) setting the filaments. Both webs may be of tissue paper; alternatively, one web may be a woven or non- woven textile, e.g. surgical gauze. Specified adhesive materials which may be softened by the application of heat or by the incorporation of solvents and/or plasticizers are polyvinyl acetate, polyethylene, copolymers of vinyl acetate and a polyoxyethylene, polyesters, polyamides and polypropylene.
