Abstract

1,214,105. Microwave ovens; R.F. couplings. BOWMARTIC Inc. 8 April, 1969 [20 Feb., 1969], No. 17749/69. Headings H4A and H5H. Microwave heating apparatus includes a pair of output probes 20, 22, extending into the oven cavity 52 from branched arms 16, 18, of a waveguide feed 10 in the form of a tee, wherein the leg 12 has an opening 14 through which to inject microwave energy from a magnetron 70 into the feed, a movable metal element such as a pin 90 being mounted for movement in a predetermined path in the waveguide to effect frequency shift of energy in the feed and interaction between the branched arms 16, 18, to cause node stirring in the energy radiated into the cavity from the probes 20, 22. Probes 20, 22, are connected to the centres of resistance heaters 24, 26. A motor 36 drives a shaft 38 coupled with a rotor shaft 34, which drives a rotor 88 carrying an offset metal pin 90. Pins of different lengths may be threaded into rotor 88. Curved or flat metal plates or screens may be substituted for pin 90 and may be reciprocated. A motor drive fan 76 cools the magnetron 70 and may direct air into leg 12 to prevent moisture or materials passing from the cavity through the tubular elements 62, 64, around the probes 20, 22, and entering the feed 10. Alternatively, the elements 62, 64, are closed with non-metallic disc collars (not shown). A wall of the cavity 52 may have openings (not shown) for the escape of moisture and materials.
