Abstract

752,206. Dielectric heating. RAYTHEON MANUFACTURING CO. July 27, 1954 [Nov. 12, 1953], No. 21955/54. Class 39(3). High frequency energy for heating food within an oven 19 is produced by a magnetron 10 coupled to the oven by a wave guide 16 and radiating horn 18, and the combined thickness of a support 21 and the bottom of a container 42 which are of dielectric material, is such as to produce an impedance match between the horn and the container. To prevent damage to the magnetron by excessive reflection of energy from the top of the oven when no material is being heated, an aperture 43 in the form of crossed slots is provided in the oven top, the energy being absorbed by a concrete asbestos block 46. Means for varying the mode intensity pattern so as to avoid local hot spots in the material being heated comprises a plate member 53 a symmetrically mounted on a rotatable insulating rod 45 and having a slot 59 whose length is of the order of half a wave length of the operating frequency of the magnetron 10. A lamp 49 mounted on a wall of the horn 18 shines up through the support 21 and container 42 enabling the container contents to be viewed through the transparent top 48 when the oven door 23 is slid back, Fig. 1. The oven is of ceramic coated metal and cyclic frequency variation of the radiated energy may produce mode variation. The oven 19 may be dispensed with and relays may be used to protect the magnetron against excess reflection of energy. A safety interlock switch system may be provided to de-energise the magnetron when the oven door is opened.
