Abstract

1,213,894. Armour-piercing, tracer shells. BREVETS AERO-MECANIQUES S.A. 9 Sept., 1968 [20 Sept., 1967], No. 42736/68. Heading F3A. A shell comprises an armour piercing core 1, Fig. 2, e.g. of steel or tungsten carbide, having an axial cavity 2 containing the combustible charge of a tracer device, the charge comprising a first constituent part 3a of uranium U238 and a second part 3b constituted by at least one tracer composition, the second part 3b having a density less than the usual steel and tungsten carbide used to constitute armour piercing cores and being capable of assuming a relay role in causing inflammation of the first part 3a. A driving band 4 is directly attached to the core if the core is of full calibre (Fig. 1, not shown) or to a base element 5a in the case of a subcalibre core. An incendiary charge 7 located beneath an alloy or metal ogive 6 supplements the incendiary effect of any burning uranium remaining at the time of impact. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, the core 1 is secured in a base element 5 by a ring 8 expansible under the action of centrifugal force. The tracing compositicn consists of magnesium and/or aluminium mixed with strontium peroxide or nitrate, preceded by an ignition cap of magnesium and barium peroxide.
