Abstract
1286587 Sub-calibre projecticles BREVETS AERO MECANIQUES SA 16 March 1970 [17 March 1969 8 April 1969] 12577/70 Heading F3A A projectile comprises a sub-calibre tungsten core 1, Fig. 1, containing an incendiary, tracer or explosive charge, an aluminium base 2, a nylon envelope 4, and a radially expansible split ring 6 locking the core against axial displacement. A pin 9 prevents relative angular movement of the core and base. The envelope is provided with a number of grooves 4c. When the projectile is fired from a rifled weapon, the split ring is expanded under the effects of centrifugal force and the envelope is fragmented a short distance from the weapon. The core, thus freed, subsequently separates from the base member. Fragmentation of the envelope proceeds from the rear forwards. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, the core is locked both axially and angularly by pins 10 which are held in place by a radially expansible split-ring 11. In a simpler modification (Fig. 4) the pins are held in place by the envelope.
