Abstract
1,213,578. Clamps. ELECTRO DEVELOPMENT CORP. 5 March, 1968 [6 March, 1967; 15 Dec., 1967], No. 10541/68. Heading E2B. [Also in Division G1] Two rings 10, Fig. 1, support the ends 20A of a displacement sensing beam of sensitive precision measuring apparatus and are looked within a hollow shaft 18 by set screws 11 projecting radially outwards and tightened against protective pads 19 firmly bonded to the inner surface of the shaft 18. Each ring 10 is joined to a hub part 15 by a spoke 12 with a radial slot 15A and set screws 16 are tightened to grip the end 20A. The screws 11 are threaded through slots 10A in the outer edge of the ring 10 and are locked by screws 13, 14. The shaft 18 is protected by thin pads (e.g. 0.020 inches thick) of heat treated spring steel bonded with a suitable adhesive (e.g. an epoxy). If the shaft 18 is deformed the ring 10 is permitted to bow by the sharp points of the screws 11, Fig 1, and in other embodiments by ball-and-socket arrangements. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the screw end is recessed and a ;ball is spot welded, soldered, brazed or otherwise made integral with the pad. In Fig. 4 (not shown) the pad includes a pedestal with a cup facing a ball welded to the screw. As shown in Fig. 5, the cup 79 has a sback stop edge 83 and lower front edge 85 to guide the ball 77 on the screw 89 towards the cup during assembly. The apparatus may be for measuring torque or the load on an axle of a vehicle by sensing shear deflection.
