Abstract

968,451. Grinding. NORTON CO. May 31, 1963 [July 11, 1962], No. 21958/63. Heading B3D. A mounting for a grinding wheel having a central raised hub portion 12 comprises means 23, 30 for accommodating variations in the shape of the hub portion, and means for clamping the wheel to the mounting. The hub portion 12 has front and rear surfaces 14, 16 which are parallel to the front and rear surfaces 18, 20 of the wheel. The mounting comprises a member 23 having a flange 26 and a cylindrical portion 24 engaging a bore 2<SP>2</SP> in the wheel with a close fit. The member 23 co-operates with a rear supporting member 30 which has a bore 32 slidably receiving the portion 24 and a flange 36 for engaging the rear surface 20 of the wheel. The supporting member 30 has a wall 34 between its hub and flange which is spaced from the surface 16 of the wheel when the flange engages the surface 20, the space accommodating variations in the shape of the hub portion 12 of the wheel and being filled with an adhesive 38, such as an epoxy or polyester resin, which may also be applied to the space between the flange 26 and surface 14. After the adhesive has bonded the members 23 and 30 to the wheel, the unit can be mounted on a shaft having threads 48 engaging the member 23 and a shoulder 44 engaging the member 30. The grinding wheel may be cup-shaped.
