Abstract

1,213,531. Friction clutches. E. A. PETERSON. 5 March, 1968, No. 10535/68. Heading F2C. [Also in Division B8] A winch comprises a cable drum 4 fast on a shaft 1, a gear-wheel 6 driven at constant speed by a pinion 8 and freely journalled on said shaft, and an operator-controlled, fluid (e.g. air) pressure actuated, friction clutch 10 which provides a variable, continuously slipping, connection between the gear 6 and the shaft 1 and is continuously cooled by cooling fluid (e.g. water). The clutch comprises friction plates 16 pressed into engagement with a driven disc 17 by expansion of a tube 18 which is pressurized through a line 19, a stationary sleeve 11, a rotating distributer 12, lines 21 and connections 22. Cooling fluid is conducted to clutch passages 27, via an inlet pipe 23, the sleeve 11, and rotating pipes 24, 26, the fluid leaving the clutch via pipes 25.
