Abstract

1,213,330. Hexamethylenediamine. MONSANTO CO. 19 Aug., 1968 [28 Aug., 1967], No. 39526/68. Heading C2C. Hexamethylene diamine is prepared by catalytic hydrogenation of adiponitrile in the presence of ammonia, the crude product being refined to remove at least the hexamethylenimine by-product which is then passed through the hydrogenation reactor and converted to additional hexamethylenediamine. The feed material may comprise H 2 , NH 3 and adiponitrile, the mole ratios ranging from 25-32 : 1 NH 3 to adiponitrile, and 35-43 : 1 H 2 to adiponitrile. The feed is usually passed continuously through a reactor at 120-170‹ C. and 4000-6000 psig in the presence of a Ni or Co catalyst, hexamethylenimine being separated from the crude product by distillation and continuously mixed with the feed. The hydrogenation may if desired be effected in the presence of a small amount of water and the hexamethylenimine may be passed into the reactor in the form of its water azeotrope. The process may also be operated batchwise.
