Abstract

1,212,421. Preparation of linear organopolysiloxane diols. TOKYO SHIBAURA ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 18 April, 1968 [21 April, 1967; 14 June, 1967], No. 18476/68. Heading C3T. A linear organopolysiloxane diol is prepared by heating one or more cyclic organopolysiloxanes in the presence of a dipolar aprotic solvent and a quantity of water additional to any already present in the solvent or catalyst, and LiOH or LiOH.H 2 O as catalyst. The viscosity of the product is related to the amount of water used. Suitable solvents include dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO), N: N-dimethyl formamide (DMF), methyl ethyl- and diethyl-formamides, and NN-dimethyl acetamide (DMA). In examples octamethyl cyclotetrasiloxane is polymerized alone or with trimethyl cyclotrisiloxane and decamethyl cyclopentasiloxane or with these and heptamethyl vinyl cyclotetrasiloxane and hexaphenyl cyclotrisiloxane in DMF, DMSO or DMA with small amounts of water, and LiOH or LiOH.H 2 O as catalyst. The products have viscosities of 4380-150,000 cS./30‹ C. One product is blended with ethyl silicate or triacetoxy methyl silane and dibutyltin dilaurate or dioctoate or tin dioctoate to give an RTV composition (curing in moist air).
