Abstract

[Also in Division C7] In a metal casting process, a mixture of amorphous carbon or organic carbon compound, and hydrocarbon is placed in direct contact with the molten metal at some stage during the process to produce a reducing atmosphere of carbon monoxide and hydrogen gases. The mixture may contact the molten metal in a shoot leading from a furnace to a ladle, in the ladle itself, or in the mould, by placing the mixture in the shoot, ladle or mould prior to pouring or by sprinkling the mixture on the surface of the molten metal. The hydrocarbon material is preferably a petroleum material, such as kerosene, and can be applied in a liquid, grease or wax form. The carbon or carbonaceous material may be breeze, graphite, charcoal, or organic materials such as straw, chaff, pasteboard, dry fiber, saw dust, cardboard, millboard or straw and wood ash. The hydrocarbon material may be impregnated in the carbonaceous material or the carbonaceous material may be encapsulated in metal tubes separate from the hydrocarbon material, The burning of the hydrocarbon material with the carbon or carbonaceous material produces a reducing atmosphere to prevent oxide films forming on the molten metal, provides heat to keep the molten metal fluid for a longer period, and enables the evolving gases to deoxidize the melt. The process is applied to producing pig iron, killed steel, rimmed steel, pure copper, and copper-titanium ingots, and white-metal castings. The metals produced are (a) a steel including 0À17% C, 0À35% Si, 0À98% Mn and 0À018% P; (b) a steel including 0À17% C, 0À22% Si, 0À45% Mn, 0À09% Cu, 0À022% Sn, 0À024% P and 0À019% S; (c) 0À55% C, 0À25% Si, 0À64% Mn, 0À08% Cu, 0À023% P, 0À018% S; (d) 0À16% C, 0À23% Si, 1À30% Mn, 0À022% P, 0À016% S; (e) a rimmed steel including 0À15- 0À17% C, 0À41-0À44% Mn, 0À018-0À021% P and 0À020-0À028% S; (f) a cast iron including, 3À74% C, 1À66% Si, 0À44% Mn, 0À09% P and 0À062% S; and (g) a white metal comprising 74% Pb, 14% Sb, and 12% Sn.
