Abstract

1,212,346 Flushing pigments. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 19 Feb., 1968 [9 March, 1967], No. 11086/67. Heading C4A. [Also in Division C3] Pigments are "flushed" from an aqueous to a non-aqueous medium by adding a precipitating agent to a stirred mixture of the non-aqueous medium and a dispersion of the pigment in an aqueous medium containing a water-soluble surface-active salt of a water-insoluble carboxylie acid, allowing the mixture to separate, and removing the aqueous layer. The precipitating agent is an acid e.g. CH 3 COOH, a salt of Ca, Ba, or Al, a water-soluble amine salt, a quaternary ammonium salt, or a cationic co-ordination complex of a fatty acid e.g. stearatochromic chloride. The surface-active carboxylic acid salt, preferably consisting 5-50% of the pigment weight, may be the sodium, potassium, ammonium, triethanolammonium, or morpholinium salt of a fatty acid, rosin, a modified rosin, a polymerized unsaturated fatty acid, an acylated amino acid or an acid-modified alkyd resin. The pigment preferably constitutes at least 15% by weight of the aqueous dispersion; numerous organic pigments are specified. The non-aqueous medium may be a lithographic varnish, or an alkyd resin in a hydrocarbon medium such as xylene or white spirit. Acetic acid and a soluble amine salt e.g. diphenylguanidine acetate may be added to assist separation of a clean aqueous medium. Examples 2, 4, 6, 8 and 9 relate to flushing into lithographic varnishes to form printing inks.
