Abstract

A vibratory finishing mill has (i) a rigidly mountable base; (ii) a container for receiving media and parts to be finished; (iii) means for resiliently mounting said container on said base; (iv) vibrating means for imparting relatively high frequency vibrations to said container; (v) means for adding liquid to said container; (vi) drainage means for withdrawing liquid from said container; and (vii) control means for maintaining said liquid in said container at a predetermined constant level in said container, said control means being connected to the container through the medium of said drainage means which comprises a valve assembly connectible with the container and operable between a closed position in which the liquid leaving the container is passed to said control means and an open position in which the liquid by-passes said control means to give direct drainage of the container. A finishing chamber 12, Fig. 1, is supported by springs 11 on a base 10 and is vibrated by a motor 13 and eccentric weights 14, 15. The chamber has a lining 23, e.g. of polyurethane; the bottom of the chamber rises helically from a low region to a high region. A weir (25) may be provided at the transition from high to low region, and may be manually inserted into the chamber or manually, semi-automatically or automatically raised through an opening in the chamber bottom, so as to raise the charge to a separating device. The bottom of the chamber 12 has a drain assembly 26 comprising a plate 27, Fig. 3, having openings 34 leading to an upper chamber 33 communicating with a lower chamber 37 through a port 38 closable by a valve 41 actuated by an air cylinder 39. A drain pipe 43 leads from the lower chamber 37. A pipe 45 leading from the upper chamber 33 has connected thereto a flexible pipe 46 which descends to a bend 47 and then ascends to pass through a sleeve 48 which directs it downward, the end 49 of the pipe extending to a point lower than the bend 47. The sleeve 48 is fixed to a support 50 adjustable on a vertical rod 51 carried by the vibrating assembly. The pipe 46 has holes 53 and a splash shield 54. Two drain assemblies may be provided. Telescoping pipes may be used. In a modification, Figs. 6 and 7, the drain assembly comprises a plate 150 having openings 34 leading to an upper chamber 156 communieating with a lower chamber 65 through a port 68 closable by a valve 77. A drain pipe 43 leads from the lower chamber 65. The valve 77 is actuated by an arm 80 retained in open or closed positions by adjustable lock plates 101, 102; it may be actuated by an air cylinder. A passage 63 leading from the upper chamber 156 is connected by a flexible coupling 112 to a 90-degree bend elbow pipe 111 to which is connected a flexible pipe 114 which ascends to pass through a sleeve 115 which directs it downward, the end 116 of the pipe extending to a point lower than the elbow 111. The sleeve 115 is fixed to a support 117 adjustable on a vertical rod 118. The pipe 114 has holes 121 and a splash shield 120.
