A wood shearing machine comprises a pressure bar and cutting blade assembly G slidably supported on a machine bed and adapted to be moved across a wood stock P to be sheared, and a pair of single acting hydraulic or pneumtic pressure cylinders C arranged one on each side of the machine and are pivotally secured at their lower ends 1 to the machine base and at their upper ends 2 to the assembly, the force exerted by the cylinders on the assembly being such as to increase the pressure of the assembly against the wood stock. The cylinders are single acting and supplied from a tank, and the force X that they exert at the end of the stroke of the assembly by a flywheel and connecting rod in addition to a component Z acting to press the assembly against the wood stock, has a component Y which dampens the inertia of the assembly.
