Apparatus for simultaneously rounding a ring gear and burnishing its teeth comprises a frame 10 a fixed driven pinion 24, a burnishing pinion 30 movable toward and away from said driven pinion, a pair of pressure rolls 64 mounted on opposite sides of a ring gear G meshed with said pinions for movement toward and away from each other at controlled rates. The burnishing pinion is mounted in a cavity 36 in a hinged brackets 34 (Fig. 4) actuated by a fluid pressure cylinder 52 (Fig. 2). The pressure rolls are mounted on pivoted spring-loaded arms 60 which are actuated to apply the straightening pressure to the ring gear by a rotary cam 70 driven by a vane type fluid motor. The curved portions of the cam provide a gradual rise in the deforming pressure of the rolls. A link 80 provided with an adjustable abutment screw 88 limits the pivotal movement of the arms 60. Although the pressure rolls produce high pressures on the ring gear to correct ovality they cause little effect on the teeth of the ring gear and the pinions in mesh therewith so that only the required burnishing pressure is maintained.
