In a process for carrying out an ion exchange cycle in liquid countercurrent, at least one exchange reaction of the cycle comprises (i) introducing into an exchanger successive fractions of a first solution containing both ions to 'be exchanged and exchanging ions, the concentration of ions to be exchanged decreasing in each fraction while the concentration of exchanging ions increases in each fraction; (ii) introducing a second solution containing only exchanging ions; (iii) introducing successive fractions of a third solution containing mainly exchanging ions, the concentration of exchanging ions decreasing in each fraction; (iv) introducing water into the exchanger; (v) recovering from the exchanger; (a) a fraction containing the water content of the bed, an aqueous solution of the desorbed ions to be exchanged and a small quantity of exchanging ions, (b) the fractions corresponding to those of said first solution, and (c) the fractions corresponding to those of said third solution; (vi) removing from the system, as the product, the fraction (a) containing the ions to be exchanged; and (vii) collecting the said fractions (b) and (c) and employing them as the first and third solution in the next subsequent cycle.
