Abstract

[Also in Division G6] Dissolved radioactive ions are removed from a liquid by passing the liquid through a column containing a supported microcrystalline difficultly soluble salt containing non-radio-active ions isotopic with the ions to be removed from the liquid. Rapid isotopic exchange takes place between the radio-active and non-radio-active ions. 'Examples describe the precipitation of strontium sulphate, yttrium phosphate, and silver iodide on to cotton wool and the use of a product containing strontium and yttrium to remove Sr-90 from strontium nitrate solution. The support may be dissolved in an organic solvent, e.g. methyl acetate, and the radioactive salt filtered off; alternatively the support may be burnt to reduce the volume of radio-active material.
