Abstract
Solutions containing uranyl ions and other uni- or bi-valent ions are caused to flow in contact with a cation-exchange material containing carboxyl groups until the proportion of uranyl to other exchangeable cations in said material is substantially greater than in the solution, and preferably substantially all the exchangeable cations are uranyl ions. The uranyl ions are then recovered from the exchange material, e.g. by treating with 10 per cent hydrochloric acid. Provided the solution still contains the uranyl cation, the pH may be above or below 7. The cation exchange material may be in the hydrogen or salt form, preferably the former when used in acid solution. Examples are given of the separation of uranyl ions from copper or cobalt ions in dilute solutions using as exchange materials a methacrylic acid/divinyl benzene copolymer, a condensation product of phenol and formaldehyde reacted with quebracho tannin and chloracetic acid and a hydrolysed ethyl acrylate/divinyl benzene copolymer.
