In the production of acetylene by partial oxidation of hydrocarbons, a mixture of hydrocarbon and oxygen passes from mixing chamber A to combustion chamber H by means of a burner block B containing parallel channels C, and the flame in the combustion chamber is stabilized by auxiliary flames E fed with auxiliary oxygen D which issues from said burner block at an angle of from 20 to 90 degrees, preferably 60-80 degrees, to the direction of said mixture issuing from channels C. Further auxiliary flames G may be provided on the walls of the combustion chamber. In an example, naptha is the starting material, but C 1-10 hydrocarbons are also referred to The hot combustion products may be quenched by water or a highboiling hydrocarbon, particularly a naphthalene.
