Abstract
1,211,477. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. 7 May, 1969 [2 May, 1968], No. 20747/68. Heading F2E. In a disc brake wherein at least one disc 10 rotatable within a stationary housing 13 is adapted to be moved axially into frictional engagement with a stationary surface 19 by an hydraulically-operated annular piston 15 working in an annular recess in an end wall 17 of the housing, the disc or discs has or have a cylindrical peripheral surface 29 adapted to be engaged by a brake band 31. As shown, a non-rotatable pressure plate 14 provided with a heat-insulating ring 22 is disposed between the piston and disc 10, the latter being slidably keyed on a rotatable shaft 12 and provided on each side thereof with rings 11 of friction material. The brake band 31 is tightened around the disc by a triangular plate 32 on a rotatable shaft 33 actuated by a hand lever. Automatic adjustment to compensate for wear of the friction surfaces is provided for by screws 25 having steep pitch, multi-start threads which upon application of the brake, are forced through the disc a distance equal to the wear and on release of the brake return to a fresh position defined by engagement of the screw heads 27 and abutments 28; reverse rotation of the screws is prevented by spring clips or ratchet devices. In a modification, a second non-rotatable plate is located between two axially movable discs.
