Abstract

1,211,435. Refractometers. AMERICAN OPTICAL CORP. Feb. 8, 1968 [March 3, 1967], No. 6361/68. Heading G2J A critical angle refractometer comprises an entrance face 1 of a measuring prism 2 for receiving thereupon a substance 9 to be examined, an optical system 4 for focusing light beams leaving the entrance face at the critical angle to produce an optical image in an image plane associated with a scale 6, and a thermal actuator 5 arranged in response to temperature changes to move a lens element of the optical system so as to produce displacement between the optical image and the scale in response to temperature changes. The measuring prism 2 may be formed of two components having different optical dispersion, the components having the same refractive index for one line of the spectron and having a common face which is spherical. An inclined fixed wedge or prism 3 may be positioned between the measuring prism and the lens and serves to modify the correction necessary due to the escalation of the scale point resulting from temperature changes of the specimen. A full thearetical treatment is given, and design data for sucrose and ethylene glycol refractometers discussed.
