Abstract
1,211,384. Apparatus for coking coal. L. & C. STEINMULLER G.m.b.H. 14 Nov., 1967 [16 Nov., 1966], No. 51768/67. Heading C5E. Apparatus for coking coal is combined with steam generating plant. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3 compacted coal 1 having channels 11 therethrough rests on a revolving annular disc 3 supported on a frame 5 which rotates around a circular track 7. A gaseous heat-transferring medium, e.g. from the combustion of solid fuel, oil, gas or blast furnace top gas, is passed from inlets 21 radially outward through the channels 11 in the coal and thence into the channels 23 and 24 from where, after partial combustion with air from the nozzles 25, it passes inwards through the coke in region 26 and through the fresh coal in region 27. From regions 26 and 27 the gases pass through slits 12 in the wall 29 of the firing chamber 4 where they are burnt with air from 14. The hot flue gas then passes upwards, together with flue gas from the burning of a supplementary fuel introduced through passages 19<SP>1</SP>, into the radiation chamber 18 and into the contact heating portion 19 of the steam generating plant. Fig. 1 (not shown) shows a simpler coking plant in which the brick checkerwork, corresponding to the brick checkerwork 28 shown in Figs. 2 and 3, forms radial or tangential slits to allow the gases, which, pass inwards through the channels in the fuel, to flow from the fuel into a central chamber, which serves as a radiant chamber for the steam generating plant, and then into the heating chamber of a tower or horizontal boiler of the steam generating plant.
