Abstract

121,118. Cave, A. M. Nov 28. 1917, [Convention date]. Electrodes.-An electrode for an alkaline accumulator consists of a perforated nickel plate a round which is wound nickel fabric d coated with active material. The whole is covered with a permeable insulating-envelope e of fibrous vegetable or mineral tissues, which is secured by tapes or cords f of the same material or of asbestos reinforced by metallic threads which may be varnished. Wings c on the plate a. are turned down over the wrappings to keep them in place, as shown in Fig. 4. The finished electrode is pressed in a mould, and pressure may aiso be applied before the envelope e is put in place. Instead of being flat as shown, the electrode may be of tubular, cylindrical, or other shape. Several electrodes may be inserted in a frame to form one large electrode. The electrodes may be employed in a battery having soluble negative electrodes consisting of zinc or other metal soluble in alkali. These may be surrounded by porous material unaffected by alkali.
