Abstract

One or both of the outside layers of the sandwich are of non mesh, uniformly microporous material e.g. of one or more layers of homogeneous microporous filter paper esp. of cellulose with a degree of polymerisation >=3500, and the central layer a semipermeable member are esp. of regenerated cellulose. Where one layer only of the first type is used it is placed against the zinc negative electrode and has an air permeability of 3-3048 cm3 per min. per sq. cm. The outer layer, against the nickel positive electrode, may be of non woven, coarse pored, material with low absorbency. The separator is impregnated with enough electrolyte only to wet uniformly the electrodes and is compressed in a tight roll between them before canning. Due to slow dendritic growth cell life is increased.
