Abstract

1,211,089. Tumbling. A. JANSEN. 21 Dec., 1967 [21 Dec., 1966], No. 58185/67. Heading B3D. A method of working the surfaces of, and in particular removing flash from, small massproduced articles of elastically deformable material comprises agitating the articles in a bath containing mechanical additions, the bath comprising a wetting agent and being at a normal room temperature. The wetting agent may be alcohol and other chemicals, e.g. swelling agents, may be added. The mechanical additions in the bath may be abrasives, grinding bodies or steel balls. The method can be performed in a drum 1 of large diameter and small axial content. A driving shaft 3 fixed to rear side wall 2 is journalled in a bearing 4. The front side wall 5 has a charging opening 6 fitted with a charging funnel 7. A discharge opening 8 at the outer edge of side wall 5 can be closed by a cover 9. In a modification, the side walls are in the form of shallow truncated cones pointing into the drum interior, and an insulating jacket is provided. In a further modification, the side walls are plane; segments are provided within the drum which widen in the circumferential direction from the centre outwards, taper axially and are curved so as to be thinner at the edges than in the middle, so providing corrugations.
