Divided out of 1,210,826. Heading C2C. A process for preparing compounds of general formula where R is C 1-4 alkyl, and alkali metal salts thereof, comprises hydrolysing an S-alkyl- (2,4,5 - trichlorophenyl) - sulphide in methanolic alkali at elevated temperature, e.g. 160-170‹ C., and where a phenol of the above formula is required, acidifying the reaction mixture. Using this process, 2,5-dichloro-4- methylmercaptophenol is prepared in the example.
