Abstract

1,210,667. Floor cleaners. HOOVER Ltd. 14 Nov., 1967 [15 Nov., 1966], No. 51855/67. Heading A4F. [Also in Division F2] A floor cleaning appliance is provided with a rotatable shaft 20 to which is attached a cleaning tool 21 by means of a coupling 4, the coupling 4 being provided with resilient deformable fingers 8, 9 having latching shoulders 10, 11 adapted to engage at least one co-operating shoulder 38 on the cleaning tool 21 and with recesses 18, (19) (Fig. 8, not shown) which can drivably engage with teeth (27, 28) (Fig. 6, not shown) on the tool. As shown, the tool is a brush comprising an annular base 23 which has a central aperture defined by a cylindrical sleeve 33 and bristles 24 extending from one surface 22. The cylindrical sleeve 33 removably accommodates the fingers 8, 9 in such a way that when the shoulders 10, 11 engage the cooperating shoulder 38 upstanding teeth (27, 28) on the tool engage, for driving connection with the coupling, in the cooperating recesses 18, (19). The coupling, which may be of plastics material and provided with a boss 7 in which the shaft 20 is screwed, may alternatively be in two parts (Fig. 7, not shown), one of the parts being provided with the deformable fingers and being rotatably and axially movable on the other part which is provided with the recesses 18, (19) so that, in this case, driving connection to the tool is effected, through the co-operating teeth and recesses of the tool and coupling respectively, only when the tool is in engagement with a surface to be cleaned. The fingers 8, 9 may be arranged to releasably engage a pad fastener 39 which is provided with a flange (41) (Fig. 5, not shown) for receiving a cleaning pad (43) and a grooved cylindrical portion 42 engageable by the fingers 8, 9.
