Abstract

1,210,655. Cutting-out presses. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. 30 Jan., 1968 [31 Jan., 1967], No. 4556/67. Heading B4B. A press for cutting-out blanks from a lay of sheet material comprises a knife 14 mounted on a carriage 12 and movable towards and away from a table 5 to effect cutting, the carriage being movable along a beam 10 under the control of a tape 23 provided with abutments 26, 28 adapted to contact cams 61, 63 so as to stop the movement of the carriage. The carriage 12 is movable along the beam 10 by means of a chain 39 passing over sprockets 35, 37, the sprocket 35 being rotated by means of an hydraulic motor M via gears 32, 34. The motor is controlled by means of the tape 23 which passes over pulleys 27, 29 and is arranged to be selectively clamped to the carriage 12 by means of piston-actuated clamps 40, 42. The stop means comprises a plate 50 adjustably mounted on the frame of the press and supporting the cams via pivoted levers 62, 72 and link 84. The link 84 is also connected to a lever 80 having a roller 82 which is arranged to act on a plate 90, the plate being connected to levers 96, 98, Fig. 5, adapted to actuate a valve M1 via a rod 112. In operation, with the apparatus in the position shown in Fig. 2, wherein the clamp 42 grips the tape, the abutment 26 contacts the cam 66 to maintain the valve M1 and a knife ram actuating switch LS9 both in the closed position, a push-button A, Fig. 1, is operated to thereby actuate the ram so that the knife descends and effects a cutting stroke. At the bottom of the stroke, a switch LS11 is actuated to reverse the direction of the ram and change over the position of the clamps 42, 40, the clamp 40 now gripping the tape. At the upper position of the knife ram a switch LS6 is actuated to thereby energize a valve SV2 so that pressurized oil passes therethrough and, via a reversing valve SV1, rotates the motor M thereby causing the carriage to move from right to left when facing the press. The tape now moves with the carriage until the abutment 28 contacts the cam 63 so as to close the valve M1 and stop the motor M. The movement of the cam 63 again causes the switch LS9 to be actuated so that the knife effects a second cutting stroke as described above, the clamps 40, 42 again being reversed so that a third complete cycle can be initiated. Upon completion of the third cycle switches LS8A, LS8B, Fig. 2, are actuated so as to cause the table 5 to move and bring an uncut portion of the lay under the knife and, also, reverse the position of the valve SV1; the same cycle of movements of the qarriage as described above is then effected from left to right. When, after a certain period of cutting, the knife becomes full of blanks they actuate a switch LS4 thereby initiating the movement of the carriage to an ejection station 20 so that upon actuation of a switch LS10, the blanks are ejected. The knife can be rotated about a vertical axis in order that the best position for the cut can be determined.
