Abstract

1,210,589. Fusible cut-outs. S & C ELECTRIC CO. 20 Dec., 1968 [22 Jan., 1968], No. 60690/68. Heading H2G. The heat and speed of travel of the arc products and gas produced on rupture of a h.v., h.v.c. fuse are reduced by a muffler comprising a cylinder 41 (Fig. 3) containing coaxial (copper) wire screens 54, 60 arranged as shown and a metallic " exhaust director " 68 having a solid central portion 78 and a rim 72 with openings therebetween through which the arc products &c pass into the second wire screen 60. The second wire screen 60 is held in place by a member 48 having exhaust ports 50. The heat-absorbing copper alloy central boss 78 has a central hole 81 on which the lower arc root tends to remain if transfer is produced by the rush of arc gas. In the fuse itself once the fusible member 26 (Fig. 2B) melts, followed by melting of part of the strain assembly 31, the spring 21 retracts the latter and conductor 25 so that the arc produces arc extinguishing products from the blocks of arc extinguishing material 30. The frangible disc 34 is then expelled and the arc products &c. vent into the muffler 41.
