Abstract

1,210,368. Shaft seals. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 15 July, 1969 [8 Aug., 1968], No. 35639/69. Heading F2B. [Also in Division F1] In a vapour, e.g. steam, turbine plant having sealing glands 34 to 39 where the rotor shaft 4 passes through the end walls of the respective turbine cylinders 1, 2, 3, the glands are supplied with sealing vapour, e.g. steam, which after leaving the glands through lines 54 to 59 is condensed in direct contact condensers 51, 52, 53. Condensation in the latter is effected by water sprayed through nozzles 61, 62, 63, the water being condensate pumped to the nozzles from the main condensers 24, 25 by pumps 28, 29. Vacuum in the condensers 51, 52, 53 is produced by electrically driven air pumps 75, 76, 77 which are interconnected by lines 78, 79 so that vacuum can be maintained in the event of a pump failure. Condensate from the condensers 51, 52, 53 is led back to the wells 26, 27 of the main condensers 24, 25 through lines 71 to 74.
