Abstract

1,210,319. Measuring temperature. MINNESOTA MINING & MFG. CO. April 9, 1968, No.17086/68. Heading G1D. A temperature sensing device especially for maintaining the presence of excessive temperatures in elongated electrical heaters comprises a length of tube 8, 9 of heat conductive material having a vaporizable fluid 10 sealed therein, the tube being arranged for disposal at an angle to the horizontal and preferably as shown having two sloping end portions leading to a central higher portion 7 disposed directly above the electrical heater (not shown), and a thermostat 4 in heat conductive relationship with the portion 7 for sensing an undue increase in temperature to switch off the heater. In use a hot spot on the heater will cause the liquid on the tube 8, 9 to boil forming a bubble as 32 which will rise and pass along the tube to the portion 7 where it condenses giving up latent heat to the thermostat 4. Continued boiling will cause the thermostat to cut off the heater. The tube may be of aluminium copper or steel and the fluid 10 may be volatile dichloro fluorocarbon liquids, alcohol or water.
