Abstract

1,210,098. Sizing composition. COMPAGNIE DE SAINT-GOBAIN. 30 Nov., 1967 [4 Jan., 1967], No. 54494/67. Headings C3B, C3P and C3R. [Also in Division D1] A composition useful for sizing thermoplastic mineral filaments, e.g. glass, comprises an aqueous dispersion of a mixture of: (I) an epoxy resin which is a condensate of epichlorohydrin and a polyhydric phenol; (II) a partially esterified or partially etherified polyvinyl alcohol which acts both as a stabilizing agent for the dispersion and as a film-forming agent; and (III) a filament-resin coupling agent. (I) may be one or more polyglycidyl ethers of bisphenol A and may comprise 1-7% by wt. of the composition. (II) may comprise 0À05- 2% by wt. of the composition and may have a viscosity in 4% aqueous soln. at 20‹ C. of 25-400 centipoises, an ester index of 20-140 (i.e. the number of mg. of KOH required for saponification of 1 g.) and a degree of hydrolysis of 85-90%. (III) may be a hydrolysed silane, e.g. methacryloxypropyltriethoxysilane, and may be present at 0À1-1À5% of composition. (III) may be diluted by acetone. The composition may also contain a non-ionic surfactant, e.g. a condensate of ethylene oxide with a phenol, which may be present at 2-15% by wt. of the composition. The composition may also contain an emulsifying agent, e.g. a salinated polyester resin which is readily dispersible in water. The composition may also contain a film-forming agent, e.g. polyvinylpyrollidone or a cellulose derivative which may be present at 0À2-10% by wt. of the composition. The composition may also contain up to 4% by wt. of lactic acid. The pH of the composition may be controlled by adding an organic acid, e.g. acetic acid, or ammonia.
