Abstract

1,210,021. 021. Electro-photographic processes. KATSURAGAWA DENKI K. K. Sept. 5, 1968 [Sept. 5, 1967], No.42251/68. Heading G2H. A method of electro-photography uses a photosensitive element which includes a layer of photoconductive material, a thin transparent highly insulative layer integrally bonded to one side of the photo-conductive layer and a transparent backing electrode on the opposite side of the photo-conductive layer, the method comprising a first step in which a field of one polarity is applied across the element and a second step in which a second field is applied across the element having a component opposite to that of the first field concurrently with the projection of a light image on the surface of the highly insulative layer, wherein concurrently with the application of the first field the element is irradiated with uniform light through the transparent backing electrode prior to projection of the light image. As shown, the photo-sensitive element is mounted upon a glass cylinder 25 with the highly insulative layer on the outside. Uniform light source 2 is located within the cylinder opposite a negative corona discharge electrode 1. A light image from a document 9 is projected by a lens 8 through a positive corona discharge electrode 8 on to the surface of the photo-sensitive element. An additional uniform light source 4 may be provided outside the cylinder. The photo-sensitive element may be provided with thin transparent insulative layers on both sides. The uniform light source 2 may be positioned before or after the point of application of the first field. The second field may be a pure D. C. field or a pulsating or alternating field.
