Abstract

1,209,579. Stud welding circuits. WARREN FASTENER CORP. 21 April, 1969 [22 April, 1968], No. 20155/69. Heading H2H. A control circuit for stud welding apparatus includes a number of energy storage devices which can be discharged simultaneously or sequentially through the stud and workpiece so as to increase the intensity and/or the duraton of the welding current. In the circuit shown, capacitors Cl, C2 are charged through a transformer 20 to voltages which are limited by a Zener diode 98. A welding operation is controlled by a sequence timer 80 which first cuts off the charging circuit by means of a thyristor 92. Next, a triac 72 is gated to supply pilot arc current from a secondary winding 28 to the stud 36 and workpiece 38 which are simultaneously drawn apart by the operation of a stud lift coil 48. A pilot arc is thus formed, and now the timer 80 supplies a signal to gate a thyristor 108 so that the first capacitor C1 discharges through the arc providing current of welding intensity. The same signal actuates an adjustable delay circuit 140 so that a second thyristor is subsequently fired and capacitor C2 discharges through a parallel circuit into the arc. The setting of the delay circuit thus controls the intensity and duration of the arc current. The lift coil 48 is now de-energized and the stud is forced against the workpiece to complete the weld. A manual switch 125 may be held open so that the stud is maintained in contact with the workpiece throughout.
