Abstract
1,209,459. Acid polishing of glassware. STEVENS & WILLIAMS Ltd. 15 Dec., 1967, No. 57230/67. Heading C1M. In the acid polishing of glassware, the articles are placed in open-access pockets 10 of a cage 2 rotating about a horizontal axis 7 positioned over a tank 1 containing the acid bath so that the cage 2 is partially immersed in the bath and the articles G are retained in the pcokets during immersion by a shield 12 in the bath extending round the lower part of the cage 2. Articles inserted, by hand, at point B are discharged at point A by gravity and circular or part circular articles are given by the cage and shield 12 an anticlockwise rotation which assists the discharge. Preferably two or three stages of water washing and drying follow the acid polishing, each tank 1 being slightly below the previous stage tank. To control the period that the articles are in the cage; discharge at A is stopped by a gate extension 21 of the shield 12 mounted on the axis 7 by arms 22 which is moved out of position to allow discharge and held by a latch 33 engaging a pin 23. Each cage 2 may be divided into racks 3, 4, 5 and 6 to take different size articles and each rack may have an individual gate 21. In the acid bath, an immersion heater 35 and spray pipes 37 are provided together with a fume extractor cowl 30. The shield 12 and pockets 10 are preferably of plastics material and are perforated to ensure that the articles are fully treated.
