[Also in Divisions C3 and G1] Articles are provided with a lacquer coating which comprises a lacquer soluble organic compound in which the molecule has at least one configuration A-N=N-B, where A represents a benzene, naphthalene or other aromatic nucleus, which has a hydroxyl group in an ortho-position relative to the diazo group, or an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or heterocyclic radical which has at least one double carbonto-carbon bond, α-#, relative to the diazo group and has a hydroxyl group in the #- position to the diazo group, and where B represents a benzene, naphthalene or other aromatic nucleus which in an ortho-position relative to the diazo group has a chlorine, bromine or iodine atom or an alkoxy group, and a copper or chromium metal ion source, located in the lacquer material and/or derived from the surface of the article when this contains the appropriate metal, and the coated article is heat-treated to produce a colour change by formation of a coloured metal-diazo complex; the colour depending on the degree of heat treatment. Representative colouring matters include the azo-coupling products of 1-amino-2, 5-dichlorobenzene, 1-amino-2-methoxy-benzene 1 amino-2-bromo-4-methylbenzene and dianisidine with #-naphthol, and of 1-amino-2-methoxy-benzene with acetylacetic acid (2-methoxy) anilide. Preferred copper salts, if such are included in the lacquer, are those of organic acids, e.g. the naphthenate or octoate. Suitable lacquer resins include alkyd, urea-and melamine-formaldehyde and epoxide resins and mixtures thereof. Examples describe the application of the lacquers to copper wire (silver-plated in one instance) followed by heattreatment. Glass or ceramics may also be coated.
